Things to do in St Helens for the October half term
As the October half-term break approaches, parents everywhere are on the lookout for exciting activities to keep their children entertained. To help, we’ve compiled a list of fantastic local attractions and events in the St Helens area that promise to fill your family’s break with fun and adventure. From thrilling seasonal events to magical theatre shows, there’s something for everyone. Get ready for a great half-term with your kids.
1. St Helens Theatre Royal Half-Term Panto
Perhaps our dancers are more used to being on stage at our local theatre, but why not take them to experience the magic of watching a live theatre show with St Helen’s Theatre Royal’s half-term panto?
This time it’s Sleeping Beauty and it’s on from 26 October to 3 November. If you’ve not seen a St Helens Theatre Royal Panto, they’re really entertaining and this family-friendly show is packed with laughter, music, tonnes of special effects, and spectacular performances. It’s a delightful way to introduce children to the world of theatre and create lasting memories for audience members of every age! Book your tickets here.
2. Knowsley Safari
A local family favourite, why not pop for an unforgettable adventure at Knowsley Safari? With a five-mile safari drive, foot safari, and engaging animal talks, your family can get up close with incredible wildlife in a safe and educational environment – all on our doorstep. It’s a perfect day out that combines learning with fun, as children explore the wonders of the animal kingdom. Did you know kids can go free this half-term with a full paying adult? 3. Pumpkin Picking at Rainford’s Farm
Just round the corner from our base at St Julie’s church hall is Rainford’s Farm. They’re famous for their Christmas trees, but did you know that at this time of year you can pick pumpkins too?
Last year they planted over 30,000 pumpkin plants of various varieties and this year they’re planting even more! From the classic orange Halloween pumpkin to a whole host of other varieties, their pumpkin patches are filled with blue, green, orange and white pumpkins. And you can even order fresh pumpkins online. Their website states: “Our pumpkin fields do not require you to book in advance, you don’t need a ticket – simply turn up and enjoy a fabulous day out with a pumpkin for everyone!”
4. Applejacks Adventure Farm in Warrington
If you’re looking for a day full of adventure, Applejacks Adventure Farm is the place to be. It’s around a 30 minute drive from our Eccleston base. And with activities ranging from zip wires and jumping pillows to tractor rides, there’s plenty to keep children entertained. The farm’s many attractions are designed to cater to kids aged 4 to 12, making it an ideal destination for family fun.
At this time of year, the farm turns into Spooky World. There’s Halloween-themed fun in the adventure farm for 4-11 year olds during the day (Fun by Day). And not everyone’s idea of fun but if you fancy scaring the pants of yourself, then give their ‘Scary at Night” sessions (ages 16+) a go! There’s also a toned down version for 10-15 year olds (Spooky at Night).
5. Gulliver’s World
Gulliver’s World is a theme park designed with young families in mind, offering a wide range of rides and attractions suitable for children aged 2 to 13. It’s around a 20 minute car ride away from our dance classes and is jam packed with thrilling rides and interactive play areas.
For the Halloween period, the park is hosting a Fright Fiesta featuring daily shows such as Gilly’s Spooky Dance Party, a trick or treat train, ghost house LIVE, and a temple raider live ride experience. Fright Fiesta tickets are £18 when booked online at least two days in advance. Gate price is £21.
6. Cineworld in St Helens
For a relaxing yet entertaining outing (especially if the weather’s not on our side) let’s not forget Cineworld in St Helens. With its convenient town centre location and nearby parking, it’s the ideal spot to catch the latest family movies. Enjoy state-of-the-art screens and sound, and some scrummy popcorn to complete your outing.
7. River of Light (free event)
School holidays can get expensive. So, between 25 Oct and 5 Nov, why not visit Liverpool’s free River of Light event? River of Light is an annual event that provides an outdoor illuminated gallery on Liverpool’s Waterfront, featuring light and sound from local, national and international artists.
This year, 12 large scale installations will be presented by some of the best light artists in the world, all inspired by the theme of ‘Play’. Find out more on the River of Light webpage.
8. Air Nation Halloween
Lowe Street in St Helens is home to Air Nation. And on 30 and 31 October 2024 they are hosting a Halloween Bounce. There’s a 4-5:30pm session, plus another at 5:45-7:15pm where kids can attend to enjoy some “frighteningly fun activities.”
You can meet Mike & Sully, wear fancy dress, bounce on the inflatables, and enjoy halloween games and delicious candy floss. There’s also the chance to take part in competitions and win some great prizes!
9. Halloween at Acorn Farm
Acorn Farm in Knowsley is hosting an event on 31 October. There’ll be lots of fun games & prizes, a fancy dress competition and a spooky haunted house! Normal admission prices apply but tickets for the haunted house are just an additional £1.50.
10. Lakeside Light Trail, Culcheth
In nearby Culcheth in Warrington is a spooktastic enchanted Lakeside Light Trail!
Enjoy winding pathways and moonlight shimmering on the gentle ripples of the water to create an immersive Halloween experience. You can toast marshmallows and buy delicious food and drinks at the stalls including apple cider, mulled wine and pumpkin spiced lattes.

11. Oris Dance’s Day of Dance
Kick off the half-term break with a Day of Dance with your friends at Oris Dance. On Tuesday 29 October, we’ll be meeting at St Julie’s church hall for a jam-packed day of activities, games, and dancing.
In the morning we’ll be working on dance technique. And after enjoying our packed lunches, we’ll be spending the afternoon in (optional) fancy dress, learning a spooktacular dance routine and enjoying some Halloween party games. You can attend for a full day or just half day I you’d prefer. We offer a sibling discount and non-members are welcome to come along too.
